Apparently Smashing Pumpkins are looking for a guitar player and more than a handful of people have told me I should apply for the job. One reason is because, apparently, they went to Australia once and played Reptile live. I have these records: Gish (1991), Siamese Dream (1993), Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995), Adore (1998), Machina/The Machines of God (2000), Oceania (2012), Monuments to an Elegy (2014), so I’ve missed some along the way. I also bought my best boots and jeans in Chicago.
David DeShazo was in the studio with us today playing mega bass on his Rick, his Precision, his fretless and his Mustang from 1971. He has played on the first NJ Brian album, and now he is on this one, weaving his magic. He is also playing on sessioneer Minneapolis Fred’s record which is about to be mixed, all these records will be out this year (we hope) and if you play the bass you will love his playing, articulate, creative, the first person on the list.
We started working with our other genius Jason playing the drums on a track, John engineering. The idea was to have three songs ready when David came in with his weapons. We spent the afternoon getting all the bass down, and then we worked on a song where David and Jason were nailing the song together. Dinner and then working on a song that NJ Brian hadn’t thought we would record, but I heard something in it and we worked on the track till late. This is life in the studio, 12-hour days, concentration, fun, work, inspiration, talented people all around you. Kevin came in to engineer the night sesh, Sarah, Olivia, Salim popped in, it’s vibey.
Music today has been the surprise discovery of a new Agitation Free record. I was telling David about them and thought one of their early records would be my album of the day until I discovered after all these years, there’s a new album, Momentum (2023). Wikipedia hasn’t been updated, but it exists. They seem to have succumbed to a drum machine instead of a drummer, but it’s nicely buried. I wish they had used a drummer, but I’m very happy to have a new album from them.
