It rained, but I didn’t notice because I was in watching Liverpool beat Bournemouth 3-1. Apparently, the rain came down quite hard, and I knew that the locals would have been glad of it, the tourists not so much. Although Saturday is generally my quiet day off, I managed a trip to the recycling and then to the supermarket, the eternal circle of consumption and disposal. Will the planet eventually be built on just mountains of landfill? Or will we be already gone before that happens? I must say this microplastics thing has been freaking me out recently. The other day (have I already mentioned this?) a fellow walked past and just dropped his empty soda can on the pavement and carried on walking. Who would do that? Who would do that in public? I wonder how he feels about separating his garbage. But you can’t really rebuke someone like that. I always had the philosophy of “Never get into an argument with anyone, who isn’t afraid to lose their teeth”.
Do you remember smoking in restaurants? How absurd that seems now. You are sitting in a posh restaurant eating haute cuisine prepared by a Michelin-star chef, with the person on the table next to you chain-smoking Marlborough Reds between courses. Haha. Then there are cigars, Table 6 has finished their meal and has requested cigars, whereas Table 7 has just been served their starter. People are tolerant of the status quo, however ridiculous it may be. We see that in society every day and the establishment sure doesn’t like to be shaken up, that’s the modern world. Addressing something as obvious as equal pay across the sexes poses the archaic institutions with questions they are too brainwashed by the acceptance of past absurdities to contemplate.
Here on Planet Earth, we do what we can to negotiate our way through the universe, hopefully with some kind of open mind. But it is hard to get Def Leppard and Leonard Cohen fans to be at ease with each other. I think it’s like my general attitude towards hip hop, I’m just not really interested, I’m also not interested in horse racing or electrical engineering, but I don’t have to hate it, I can just ignore it, blaze my own trail, Robin Trower and James Blake here I come. Betting, that’s another one I can’t do. Perhaps it’s exciting when you win, but it must be terrible to consistently lose depending on pure luck, the random position of a ball on a wheel to save you. Maybe it’s fun? Maybe it’s a good way to get out and meet people. What about those poker games with the sunglasses? Who enjoys that kind of subterfuge?
Music today has been The Beatles’ White Album just because I felt like it. This time it wasn’t the Malaysian version I posted in January, this copy had Happiness Is A Warm Gum in the track listing.
