TO WHERE I AM NOW

I’ve had to delete a couple of nasty Trumpers today. So here’s the scoop, if you don’t agree with my politics (which this blog only skirts over) this is not a battleground for you to express your inane opinions. You don’t like what I write about whether it be the state of the world or the music I listen to or the music I create then please quietly leave and return to your own people which are not my people. I don’t want you here, I don’t want to argue with you and if you can defend your glorious hateful leader then I cannot waste my time with you nor you surely with me. If you are anti gay, if you have issues with race, if you have issues with women, if you think women should not be in control of their own body and yet you believe in the death penalty, there is nothing to debate. Turn on Fox and take your paranoia and backward thinking philosophies about people from other countries, your hang-ups about sexuality, take your guns and ammunition and build that wall around you so we don’t have to deal with you anymore. Discard your mask and cough in the face of humanity as much as you like but don’t do it here. This is a safe place. No nasty goodbyes, just stay on your side of the fence and please erase me from your sad little world. Thank you.

Whilst out walking today I looked up to see a chaos of birds in the sky, screeching and flying in circles, they were quite high up and it seemed like it was seagulls, jackdaws and pigeons meeting to address the issues of being a bird living on the Earth. It was like a Hitchcock film not just because of the birds gathering but because the air was still, it was muggy and everything else seemed to be shrouded in silence as if the birds controlled sound itself. I walked uneasily towards the studio, I had my shirt off again and that in itself made Penzance uneasy. I arrived at the studio to see that the postman had delivered two sixties Herbie Hancock Blue Note CDs wrapped in innovative packaging that was almost an exercise in engineering. It took me a while to open the package using various tools and the ancient text from a lost civilisation.

We were in the studio today finishing off guitars on one of Ahad’s tracks. I had to play a solo and Dare put some piano on the chorus. Later in the day, we had Ross the double bass player arrive. We had one track where we thought this instrument would be appropriate. Can you imagine having to cart that beautiful monster around with you everywhere you go? Up and down stairs, in and out of vehicles, in and out of venues, fitting it onto the stage. Ross played on the track, did a great job and afterwards, I had a bit of a go on the beast to see what it was like to play. I’m not a double bass player and there’s no frets so you have to get used to the distances between the notes. You have to balance it, you have to reach down for the high notes and you have to tune it. I suppose that on stage it might be hard to hear because it’s so low in frequency. Anyway, exciting to have a different instrument and player in the studio today. And nice to have a picture playing it next to the flag of Europe where I will lovingly spend time with my German wife and my Swedish daughter and granddaughter whilst visiting my friends in France and Italy, Spain and Portugal and attempt to speak their wonderful languages as I travel freely between the borders – that is if I manage to gain residency outside of the island of England. A recession was announced today, Brexit, the worst of the pandemic, de Pfeffel and his cronies, xenophobia, how sad that you drive me away. I know you don’t all hate foreigners but the ones that do gave you the victory.

Football was exciting as Atalanta nearly beat Paris St. Germain, the underdogs holding onto the lead until the last few minutes when the favourites scored twice and knocked the Italians out. It was the first game of the knockout stage of the Champions League and there will be football for the rest of the week. There’s also snooker but I don’t have BBC so I can’t watch that. I like to watch sport and I like to read and study French and write and listen to records. I like to visit the sea and scratch under the chins of cats and behind the ears of dogs. I like to teach and play and create. I like to share life with friends and avoid the nasty streak that runs through this beautiful universe. There’s one piece of advice I always adhere to and give to my friends – DELETE.

Music today is staying in the past until I find the time to file records away and investigate all the new records that have arrived. Lots of new releases which my friend Ed Rogers in New York is asking me about. I was explaining to Ed today I’ve been enjoying wandering through the shelves and listening to records I’ve had for years and heard lots of times. It’s easier to talk about records you know than ones you are listening to for the first time, you have to get to know them. So as I said to Ed, I could listen to one new album a night four times in a row. Maybe that is a good idea but for now, I’m playing records that I like and are new to a lot of people that read this blog, so that’s a good thing.

Today I didn’t follow up with Hatfield and the North’s other records, instead I felt like some Sonja Kristina and Curved Air. Their first album Air Conditioning was released in 1970 on Warner Brothers and was an adventure of Progressive Folk with a five-piece band that included Darryl Way on electric violin and Francis Monkman on keyboards and guitar, both were music college graduates. The band was augmented with Rob Martin on bass and the exotically named Florian Pilkington-Miksa on drums and with Sonja Kristina on vocals, they were bound for success.

They were innovative in their use of electronic sounds often coming from Darryl Way as he fed his violin into arrays of amplification and effects as heard on the track Vivaldi. But the album was varied and had lots of intriguing songs with titles like Screw and Stretch as well as the first single It Happened Today. It reached No. 8 on the British charts and was the first commercially available picture disc. They were named after the album A Rainbow In Curved Air released by minimalist and experimental electronic innovator Terry Riley in 1969 (Monkman had participated in the first UK performance of Riley’s previous album In C). Kristina had been in the musical Hair and the fortuitous coming together of the group’s members resulted in some excellent albums in the early seventies.

The second album called Second Album saw the departure of bassist Rob Martin replaced by Ian Eyre and followed the same path of catchy Progressive Folk with Kristina’s distinctive vocals and stage presence as well as electronic sounds coming from Way’s violin and Monkman’s keyboards. The album reached No. 11 in the UK chart and featured the hit single Back Street Luv that reached No. 4 in the singles chart. Cracks began to appear as the writing for the band split into the Way/Kristina camp on Side 1 and the Monkman camp on Side 2 with Ian Eyre co-writing the hit single and interestingly with Way not playing on it.

The first Curved Air album I ever bought was their third, Phantasmagoria, released in 1972. By this album, Ian Eyre had gone replaced by Mike Wedgwood on the bass. The album reached No. 20 in the UK charts and is one of my favourites of the era. More intriguing lyrical journeys, Marie Antoinette, Melinda (More Or Less) and that wonderful mixture of things – real songs with long instrumental passages. The idea that a real song doesn’t have to be just three minutes but also that virtuoso playing doesn’t justify itself with its skilfulness. Both the songs and the musical approach are essential elements. It’s always sad to see a creative band that struggles to execute their ideas or amazing musicians short on ideas. The use of the EMS 100 synth on Sonja Kristina’s voice on the track Whose Shoulder Are You Looking Over Anyway? breaks away from the format of songs and skills and finds a place for experimentation on the album.

But then it happened, Way, Monkman and Pilkington-Miksa left, leaving Kristina and newish bass player Wedgwood to assemble a new band for their next album Air Cut released in 1973. Kirby Gregory from Stretch (Why Did You Do It?) came in and shared guitars and bass with Wedgwood. Jim Russell joined on drums and Eddie Jobson on violin and keys. It was the last album before their original lineup’s (minus the various bass players) live reunion tour album. The lineup just made this one album. It starts off with a bang and a crash but I like it, especially as the song is called The Purple Speed Queen and seems to be about someone called Emily Jane. This album gets a bit of a bad rap but it’s not the straight-ahead Rock record I’ve heard talk about. The second track Elfin Boy is pure acoustic Folk beautifully sung by Kristina. The album is in fact quite varied, Eddie Jobson showing off his mad piano skills and as it’s 1973 and pre-Punk it has no fear of scope. Metamorphosis might have been a Siouxsie and the Banshees song if Kristina were ten years younger and Eddie Jobson had been locked out of the studio. I’m lucky, I like it all, as long as it’s good.

Note Monkman went on to join Sky, Jobson went on to join Roxy Music and UK and played with Zappa and Jethro Tull. Later on pre-Police Stewart Copeland joined the band, married Kristina and had kids. I saw them play live at Liverpool Stadium in the mid-seventies and fell in love with Sonja Kristina immediately.

Song Of The Day is Curved Air on Beat Club, Germany, performing Back Street Luv in 1971 with Barry De Souza sitting in on drums for Florian Pilkington-Miksa who had taken ill.

You usually don’t spend the day in the studio an You usually don’t spend the day in the studio and the night at a gig but if you put the studio next to the gig then there’s a greater chance. So @salimnourallah did just that, he put the gig and the studio next to each other and made it possible for me to spend the day recording and the evening playing live 🎵

TO WHERE I AM NOW A visit in the studio today fro TO WHERE I AM NOW

A visit in the studio today from old mate Mark Burgess from The Chameleons who has been hanging in Texas recently. I was thinking about the two of us growing up in the northwest of England and all these years later finding ourselves in such an unlikely spot together. We fixed a few issues in the universe and I carried on recording some guitars until Mark had to leave. Mark had played at the Galactic Headquarters next to the studio this year as Olivia and I had four years ago and this reminded me to remind myself to remind everyone to remind their friends that we will be playing there with Salim on Saturday, New Year’s Eve, for the ultimate in intimate performance. You can get tickets here (follow link below).

TO WHERE I AM NOW Sadness manifested in a buildin TO WHERE I AM NOW

Sadness manifested in a building, today we went to visit Paisley Park. Prince built Paisley Park in Chanhassen, about twenty minutes southwest of Minneapolis. It opened in 1987 and he recorded his later albums there. Apart from Prince, REM also recorded and mixed Out Of Time there, recording Kate Pearson’s vocal on Shiny Happy People vocal. Madonna had Prince play guitar on three songs from Like A Prayer and the two co-wrote Love Song, finishing it remotely due to Madonna not being able to stand the cold weather and the rather desolate location of the studio. Of course, there are things around but it’s not in the city and it’s not in the countryside, it’s in a suburb, no distractions, just what Prince wanted.
