TO WHERE I AM NOW

Oh my, I woke up today with the horrible migraine diamonds in my eyes! How can that happen when you’ve been asleep, rested, horizontal, stress-free, no bright lights, no noise, no chemical-filled food, just me, my wife, and my pillow, perhaps we need a cat. I saw local lovely cat Pepper again today across the car park and when I called her she came running over for a stroke (I hope I’m not having a stroke). A man came by and scratched her under the chin, animal lovers. Don’t you hate people that are cruel to animals, there was an article in the paper yesterday about a company that was supplying goat’s milk to supermarkets but they were abusing the animals. Not only, why would you do that but how could you do that? When these monsters die they will be sent to a planet of only revengeful goats that will gore them in the groin for eternity.

I had seshes today with Noelle in Montreal and Chris in New Jersey although I felt that hazy dull headache, that nasty feeling of the aftermath of something that isn’t killing you, letting you function but fighting to recover. You just have to be patient and distract yourself with stimulation which the creative souls of Noelle and Chris always do. Whilst I was sessioneering (sounds like something pirates do on the high seas) Olivia walked to the only dry cleaners around which is outside town in a supermarket about 40 minutes away. She got to walk the beach path and then the actual beach where she spotted crabs and got to feel the sand between her toes. She had been to pick up an old military jacket that was in my family and is allegedly from the Boer war, if it’s true it’s in very good condition, very old and very red.

She arrived at the studio as I was ready to leave, cobweb head needed fresh air so she dropped off everything (the vege sausages, the vege sausages and the vege sausages) and we headed straight out. It was an absolutely beautiful day and we decided to walk down through the town to the harbour. We passed by a 1965 (E reg) VW campervan in perfect condition, it was hard to know what colour it was. The tourists are about and even if you spend a lot of time here it still feels like you are in a holiday destination – quaint harbours, seagulls, charter boats, fishing vessels, pirates. Unfortunately, not everything is open but the walks are still gorgeous and we slowly moved past the boats towards Battery Rocks which sit behind the art deco open-air Jubilee Pool, sadly closed. There were people young and old sunbathing, talking, just sitting taking in this beautiful serene scene. The sun was still high enough in the sky to send a wide shaft of light along the surface of the sea towards the rock where we were standing. Below us, surrounded, the water was crystal clear but instead of making me just love it for what it was, it made me consider all that purposeful pollution, bastards! The tide was slowly coming in and inched its way up the exposed rocks towards the shore, always stopping short as if it could move into the streets anytime but decided no, it would wait for the reinforcements of the wind in the coming autumn, for now, let’s relax.

We stayed there on the rock for a while, a young man came down from his spot behind the wall of the pool on a ledge next to the sea and tentatively shrank into the cold water, swimming out to the first buoy. I was both jealous and happy to be on dry land wrapped in clothes enjoying the mild heat of the sun but I knew that the bracing water would be another thrill, a different sensation, invigorating, something to really make you feel alive.

We reluctantly headed back towards the studio, sad to leave such a beautiful place and circumstance behind. We decided to walk back through the old churchyard. Weather-battered stones, long-forgotten souls and others luckier in death’s legacy survived in rock, name carved 150 years ago, one said Mary The Wife and the husband indistinguishable underneath with just casual eyes. Overgrown sepultures and different species of palms and other exotic plants in a graveyard that seemed like it hadn’t been used as a place of rest for 100 years.

From there we ran into Gareth and his father, locals with good vibes, good hearts and records! Gareth collects of course and we walked up the road together solving the problems of the universe. Outside the Co-op, we met Louella, Johanna from Germany and Harry. We’ve met Louella before but not the other two and Johanna and Olivia discovered they were from the same part of Germany. We spoke for a while before finally returning to the studio, to listen, to write and reflect on a day of realities and wonders.

Music today has taken a trip to 1970 again, the absolute opposite to Betty Davis song-wise, sound-wise, image-wise, but they are both strong talented women who went missing. Vashti Bunyan made one Folk album, Just Another Diamond Day (1970). It sold so badly that she gave up music as a bad idea. I saw it on eBay today for £3,570.

It all started before that in 1965 after Stones’ manager Andrew Loog Oldham had her record, the Jagger/Richards composition Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind, nothing happened. She made another single for Columbia, Train Song, in 1966 but still, nothing happened. So she set off with a friend in a horse and carriage with hopes to join Donovan’s music commune, it never happened but she ran into producer Joe Boyd (Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, Incredible String Band) who offered her a deal when she was ready. Her travelling had given her the opportunity to write the songs that would appear on Just Another Diamond Day.

Folk luminaries were involved with the project, Simon Nicol and Dave Swarbrick from Fairport Convention, Robin Williamson from The Incredible String Band, folky John James and arranger Robert Kirkby (Nick Drake). Again nothing happened so she retired from the music and brought up her children. Somehow she was rediscovered and in 2005 she released her second album Lookaftering followed by Heartleap in 2014. She released a double compilation album of those early singles and demos called Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind in 2007. The newly recorded albums sound like time stood still. So the moral of the story is never say never and in the wake of the new Shirley Collins album Heart’s Ease (she is 85 years old) it might be time for you to revisit your classic English Folk gene.

If Vashti Bunyan is a little too far into mellow English Folk tradition then let us travel across the Atlantic and find Karen Dalton. I only have one CD by her, her second album In My Own Time (1971), like Betty Davis on Just Sunshine Records and like Vashti Bunyan and Betty, the pure personality of it transcends its style. It’s supposed to be American Folk influenced a la Greenwich village with a Blues tinge but her voice is so particular that you don’t quite know where it sits. She’s been compared to Billie Holiday, but that’s not it, she complained that she was more into Bessie Smith but perhaps she has a white woman’s voice and a black woman’s soul. Her voice is kind of high and has a Country side but guess what, it’s not that either. She might be Macy Gray’s Mamma, no, ignore that, is there something Nina Simone, not tone but something?

I love this album and must find her first, It’s So Hard To Tell Who’s Going To Love You The Best (1969). She played both 12 string guitar and banjo. A contemporary of Fred Neil, Tim Hardin and Bob Dylan, she was apparently a reluctant performer who tried to avoid playing her own songs and allegedly some of them only ending up being recorded in a night at the studio because they tricked her into thinking that the tape wasn’t running. I’m sure Lucinda Williams has listened to her and I’m sure Annette Peacock has too.

A sad story that only gave birth to two studio albums. Born in Bonham, Texas (also the birthplace of Jazz great Charlie Christian), she was divorced twice before she was 21, lost two teeth stopping a fight between two of her boyfriends, was addicted to alcohol and heroin and died of an AIDS-related illness at the age of 55 whilst living in a mobile home outside Woodstock. There have been some found tapes of live performances and demos that you can find quite easily on CD or on Spotify.

It doesn’t end. Linda Perhacs released Parallelograms in 1970, again nobody noticed. Well, why would you notice a dental hygienist from Beverly Hills? One of her clients heard her demo and helped her make an album, when it did nothing she went back to work.

The album was rediscovered by the late namesake Michael Piper who lived very close to me when I lived in Brooklyn. I visited him and he gave me a copy of the CD. I was later to find he was also friends with Anekdoten who I later joined. But Perhacs was that classic Californian Psychedelic hippie singer-songwriter with great songs, voice, sound and ideas in the vein of a folky Joni Mitchell. It’s a lovely record.

Like Vashti Bunyan, this discovery led to the release of a second album 44 years later, The Soul Of All Natural Things (2014), and since I’m A Harmony (2017). It’s incredible how these artists have changed so little since their debut albums from so long ago. The soul doesn’t age and all new-fangled technological leaps can’t take away the essence of these beautiful artists and their heartfelt music.

Song Of The Day I is Parallelograms, the title track from Linda Perhacs’ debut album, released in 1970 on Capp Records.

 
Song Of The Day II is Something On Your Mind from In My Own Time, the second album from Karen Dalton, released in 1971 on Paramount Records.

 
Song Of The Day III is Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind written by Mick and Keith, originally released by the duo Dick and Dee Dee as a B-side to another Jagger/Richards song, Blue Turns To Grey, released in early 1965 on Warner Bros. and then again by Vashti Bunyan in the same year on Decca. It appeared on the Stones’ compilation album Metamorphosis, released in 1975.

You usually don’t spend the day in the studio an You usually don’t spend the day in the studio and the night at a gig but if you put the studio next to the gig then there’s a greater chance. So @salimnourallah did just that, he put the gig and the studio next to each other and made it possible for me to spend the day recording and the evening playing live 🎵

TO WHERE I AM NOW A visit in the studio today fro TO WHERE I AM NOW

A visit in the studio today from old mate Mark Burgess from The Chameleons who has been hanging in Texas recently. I was thinking about the two of us growing up in the northwest of England and all these years later finding ourselves in such an unlikely spot together. We fixed a few issues in the universe and I carried on recording some guitars until Mark had to leave. Mark had played at the Galactic Headquarters next to the studio this year as Olivia and I had four years ago and this reminded me to remind myself to remind everyone to remind their friends that we will be playing there with Salim on Saturday, New Year’s Eve, for the ultimate in intimate performance. TO WHERE I AM NOW Sadness manifested in a buildin TO WHERE I AM NOW

Sadness manifested in a building, today we went to visit Paisley Park. Prince built Paisley Park in Chanhassen, about twenty minutes southwest of Minneapolis. It opened in 1987 and he recorded his later albums there. Apart from Prince, REM also recorded and mixed Out Of Time there, recording Kate Pearson’s vocal on Shiny Happy People vocal. Madonna had Prince play guitar on three songs from Like A Prayer and the two co-wrote Love Song, finishing it remotely due to Madonna not being able to stand the cold weather and the rather desolate location of the studio. Of course, there are things around but it’s not in the city and it’s not in the countryside, it’s in a suburb, no distractions, just what Prince wanted.
