TO WHERE I AM NOW

Tonight and tomorrow I was supposed to be playing in Quebec City with Anekdoten. How disappointing not to be there, still, there would not have been time to finish the Space Summit album which we did today as the final mix of track 10 was printed. (That’s old speak for mixed to tape.) We are thinking of writing an extra acoustic track if time allows it, but I suppose there’s no rush in releasing this album to a world that may not be able to afford to buy it, and MOAT and Nightjar vinyl (the finished ones). How is it even possible to have a backlog of albums to release? That must be a first for me, but then so is a pandemic.

Other new projects are on the way, but first we will be moving on to what I hope will be vocals on the project with Loom and ex Tangerine Dreamer Jerome Froese. If you haven’t heard Tangerine Dream you must have been living on Mars (although they were very popular on Mars). Jerome has finished putting together our collaboration for an instrumental Side 1 and I will record vocals here for Side 2. But first, we will be in the studio tomorrow, playing guitar on my ‘Ami Français’ Arno from Sweet Gum Tree’s track. I played on the track Bird Of Passage and toured with them as their bass player.

We went past our new studio and archive today. We will be all moved in by Christmas. It has lots of space for living, room for the archive and the studio and the walls are too thick to bother the neighbours. It’s an old chapel from 1843 (Church of St Paul, Penzance). The only issue is the £100,000 or best offer asking price. Hm, I’ll let you know when we figure that part out.

If you are a famous singer don’t meet me, that’s two famous singers I’ve met that have died this week! But seriously and sadly, today we lost The Pretty Things’ Phil May. May was the lead singer of a group that were known for being badder than the bad boys of Rock ‘n’ Roll in an era where hell-raising might have involved how you looked and how much you drank. Still, The Who, The Stones, the Pretty Things, were all running riot, fighting the establishment when the Punks were still dreaming up the safety pin rebellion. May was the first man to have really long hair in the first phase of change to what was acceptable for a man since before World War l when longer hair and beards were more popular. Can you imagine that people were so dumb that they associated long hair as an affront to society, especially considering that all those fine heroes of history, Mozart, Beethoven, the kings through the centuries and even the ancient Greeks wore their hair long as a sign of both wealth and power. Can you believe that even today we live in a society where say, in business or politics, long hair would be considered unruly. What a stoopid world we live in, next you’ll be brainwashed into thinking that a groomed man in a suit with shorter hair is a more trustworthy figure. Ha ha, what a joke.

I saw the Pretty Things play in Sydney some years ago and they were a really great, vibey and happening band, still. I met Phil May briefly and I also got to meet the friendly bassist and their legendary guitarist, Dick Taylor. Taylor was originally in the Stones and left in 1962 to go back to college, his vacated position was taken by Bill Wyman. In 1963 he was a founder member of the Pretty Things, returning to his original instrument, guitar, which he’d vacated due to the arrival in the Stones of Brian Jones.

One night in Los Angeles at the same venue as the absurd beer and cigarette event (House Of Blues). I was standing in the dressing room and Ricky Maymi from Brian Jonestown Massacre came backstage with another bloke. “Hello”, he said, “I’m Twink”. Wow! Twink, the Pretty Things and Pink Fairies drummer. One nice thing about being in a band is when someone you really like, someone whose records you have, comes and says hello and they are cool. I guess it’s only the nice ones that bother, how do horrible people meet each other? Ha ha!

Music today has been all Pretty Things. Their first, self-titled album (1965), had different track listings in the UK and USA. (It reached No. 6 in the UK chart.) Their debut single Rosalyn had reached No. 41 in the UK in 1964 and appeared on the American release of their debut album as did the second single, Don’t Bring Me Down, No. 10 in the UK in the same year (David Bowie recorded both songs on Pin Ups, his covers album released in 1973). At this point they were a noisy Beat Group, but as they developed through their second album, Get The Picture, also released in 1965 to Emotions in 1967, they were not exactly mellowing, but becoming more melodic. Emotions had a softer sound than their first two albums, drummer Viv Prince had gone, replaced by Skip Alan and even before the release of Emotions, rhythm guitarist Brian Pendleton and bassist John Stax had also left the band.

Their masterpiece was yet to come and in 1968 they released SF Sorrow, arguably the first Rock Opera, preceding the release of The Who’s Tommy by six months. Keyboard player Jon Povey was now firmly established in the band, Wally Waller had taken over as permanent bass player, Twink had taken over from Skip Alan on drums, albeit temporarily. The album is essential for any record collection, a melodic, adventurous, Psychedelic and groundbreaking album, that somehow the world forgot to remember. It’s difficult to explain because it is so good, although in America it didn’t stand a chance. It was released in a strange cover, cut in the shape of a gravestone and released on Rare Earth, a subsidiary of Motown. With the wrong label and no successful single it was doomed to failure and the record disappeared without a trace.

This was followed by Parachute in 1970 which saw the departure of Dick Taylor and had Vic Unitt from the Edgar Broughton Band playing guitar on the album. It was another great album and this one actually made it to No. 43 in the British charts. It saw the band finding their way into the seventies and in changing times it wasn’t the easiest transition as the world moved on from the sixties era. Other groups like The Tremeloes struggled despite a change in their sound, they were old news and seen as a lightweight Pop group whereas the Pretty Things were altogether tougher in sound and in image and fitted into the seventies more comfortably despite their sixties roots. Pete Tolson took over on guitar and their ever-changing line up saw them replace Wally Waller with Stuart Brooks on bass and release Freeway Madness (1972). The seventies had now fully taken over and there wasn’t much left of their original sound, but Phil May was still there as was Povey and Skip Alan as they were attempted to stay relevant. Their harmonies from the later sixties albums were intact and that fitted in very well with the sound of the day, but again the album failed to attract enough attention for their label (Warner Brothers) to keep them.

Unsurprisingly after this, they found themselves managed by Led Zep manager Peter Grant and on Led Zep’s Swan Song label for Silk Torpedo (1974). This is the album that introduced me to them as I saw them on the Old Grey Whistle Test in the early seventies, playing live in the studio. At this stage they were fully transformed and with another new bass player in Gordon John Edwards. It might have been this ability to adapt that kept them together for those 55 years, although commercial success remained elusive. This album was a more melodic version of the band after Freeway Madness and I played it a lot. It failed to chart in the UK and only made it to 104 in the US charts and only then because of the power of Led Zep and Peter Grant.

They carried on and released Savage Eye in 1976, again on Swan Song. No chart position in the UK and No. 163 in America. Phil May left the band and their relationship with Swan Song, their big chance, was gone. But then out of the blue after not really, really, really breaking up, both Wally Waller and Dick Taylor returned with Phil May for Cross Talk (1980), but nothing happened.

Over the next 20 years they would only make two albums, Out Of The Island in 1987 was mainly re-recordings of old songs, but then in 1999 they made Rage Before Beauty, their first complete album of original material since Cross Talk in 1980. This was followed by Balboa Island in 2007. Re-recordings, live releases and collections ensued and even the release of an obscure record they made with Frenchman Philippe DeBarge in 1969.

Phil May and Dick Taylor made The Sweet Pretty Things (Are In Bed Now, of Course…) in 2015 and by 2018, finally, they broke up for good. Phil May’s death a sad conclusion to a fascinating musical journey. RIP Phil May. Condolences to friends and family.

You usually don’t spend the day in the studio an You usually don’t spend the day in the studio and the night at a gig but if you put the studio next to the gig then there’s a greater chance. So @salimnourallah did just that, he put the gig and the studio next to each other and made it possible for me to spend the day recording and the evening playing live 🎵

TO WHERE I AM NOW A visit in the studio today fro TO WHERE I AM NOW

A visit in the studio today from old mate Mark Burgess from The Chameleons who has been hanging in Texas recently. I was thinking about the two of us growing up in the northwest of England and all these years later finding ourselves in such an unlikely spot together. We fixed a few issues in the universe and I carried on recording some guitars until Mark had to leave. Mark had played at the Galactic Headquarters next to the studio this year as Olivia and I had four years ago and this reminded me to remind myself to remind everyone to remind their friends that we will be playing there with Salim on Saturday, New Year’s Eve, for the ultimate in intimate performance. TO WHERE I AM NOW Sadness manifested in a buildin TO WHERE I AM NOW

Sadness manifested in a building, today we went to visit Paisley Park. Prince built Paisley Park in Chanhassen, about twenty minutes southwest of Minneapolis. It opened in 1987 and he recorded his later albums there. Apart from Prince, REM also recorded and mixed Out Of Time there, recording Kate Pearson’s vocal on Shiny Happy People vocal. Madonna had Prince play guitar on three songs from Like A Prayer and the two co-wrote Love Song, finishing it remotely due to Madonna not being able to stand the cold weather and the rather desolate location of the studio. Of course, there are things around but it’s not in the city and it’s not in the countryside, it’s in a suburb, no distractions, just what Prince wanted.
